Knowledge is king. We all know that. Or do we? How many times have you used the excuse, “I’m always the last to know.” Today, that is no excuse at all. With so many avenues to information, in particular the Internet, you no longer have an excuse for ignorance.
If something newsworthy happen that affects your community or your profession, you can use that information to support some of your own new or revised business strategies. Your competition knows what is going on, shouldn’t you?
Maybe there’s a new piece of technology that would make work easier on your technicians? Maybe there’s a community event you absolutely want to have a presence at? Or maybe there’s a new regulation that was just announced? All of those are important to you and your business—and you need to know about them…
Why not designate a person in your business to be the “news correspondent?” Ask someone to assimilate the top news stories of the day (or week) that affect your business and then e-mail that information to the entire staff. Have them visit a list of certain websites that you know will are related to your community and to the HVAC trade.
During your weekly company meetings, take 5 minutes to discuss with your team what’s going on in the news. See if anyone has any ideas of what you can do to promote the company at an upcoming event…. See if anyone has heard about a new device that a manufacturer has released that could help customers. Your team will enjoy being a part of the conversation. They’ll feel like they have part ownership in the business.
Knowledge really is power. You can do a great many things with it. And by staying informed and keeping your team informed, you’ll never be able to say that you were “the last to know” ever again.
